Information systems are essential to the effective operation and management of
virtually all business organizations. Computer dependency is simply a fact of
life. The focus of this course is on developing and managing computer-based
information systems within business organizations. Information systems are
designed and developed in concert with the design and development of business
processes and business systems. Managers must decide what role computer-based
information systems will play within the business and what capabilities are
required of the computer-based system. These decisions determine the data and
processing requirements that must be implemented. Managing data as a corporate
resource requires a deep understanding of business processes and of the
underlying structure of the data needed to support them. Well-managed data
resources enable and support (1) the development and integration of
cross-functional and inter-organizational business processes and (2)
decision-making at all levels of management. Business process integration has
become essential to many organizations as they attempt to remain competitive in
the information economy. Relational database technology, process modeling, data
modeling, data administration, application and report generators, CASE tools,
and data warehouses play key roles in effectively managing data resources and in
managing effectively using data resources. The Internet has enabled corporate
data resources to be accessed and managed from anywhere in the world,
facilitating the development of outsourced applications and inter-organizational
information systems. These are the key technologies addressed in this course.
